Additional Information

NCAA Primary Blanket Accident Plan

An important best practice to consider is to require student athletes to have primary insurance, but institutions have encountered difficulty in finding primary insurance that will cover athletic injuries. To this end, Mutual of Omaha offers a primary accident-only insurance plan for athletic-related injuries to assist institutions that require student athletes to have other insurance to control costs.

Eligibility

4-year institutions purchasing the excess basic medical insurance coverage through Mutual of Omaha are eligible to purchase this coverage.

Plan Benefits

The Blanket Primary Accident Program provides coverage while students are participating in covered athletic events only.

  • Accident Medical Expense Maximum: $5,000
  • Deductible: $0 per injury
  • Benefit Period: 104 weeks

Should a participating student-athlete have other coverage, payment of benefits will be coordinated accordingly.

While ICS basic medical insurance covers injuries sustained by prospective student-athletes while on a campus visit up to the medical maximum, the NCAA catastrophic insurance program is limited in its coverage of prospective student-athletes.

Their catastrophic policy only covers “a prospective student who has graduated from high school and signed an irrevocable commitment to participate in a Qualifying Intercollegiate Sport (or its equivalent for cheerleading) at a Participating School.” Prospective student-athletes coming to your campus for a try-outs who do not meet these requirements are NOT covered under the NCAA Catastrophic program.

We offer a separate Prospective Student-Athlete Insurance Policy to fill this gap, covering catastrophic injuries for prospective student-athletes participating in qualifying sports, should an injury reach that point. It is can be purchased with a $5MM or $10MM maximum; both options are offered at a reasonable cost.

Additional Coverages

  • Expanded Cheerleading Coverage
  • Coaches Choice
  • Promotional Indemnity – Prize Insurance
  • Event Cancellation Coverage
  • Weather Coverage
  • Incentive Bonus

Expanded Cheerleading Coverage

ICS Basic medical policies only cover cheerleading, drill, dance, mascots, etc. for practice or performing at an intercollegiate sport.  To cover participation in additional activities such as camps, competitions not sanctioned by their governing association, community service, parades, etc. this supplemental coverage is available at a very reasonable cost. It is not a standalone product but can be purchased in conjunction with the institution’s ICS basic medical policy.

Scholarship Indemnification

Provides cost of attendance coverage for student-athletes so they can complete their education in the event an injury or illness leaves them unable to complete their athletic commitment to the institution.

Camps/Clinics, Team/Leagues, Etc.

Coaches and organizations often conduct sports camps or clinics in addition to their regular intercollegiate sports programs. Having camp insurance in place can help protect against third party bodily injury and property damage claims due to alleged negligence.  (Add button with link to Specialty Programs)

Event General Liability

Event General Liability insurance provides protection for third party bodily injury and property damage that could arise from a campus event. Coverage is available for sporting events, meetings, conferences, consumer trade shows special occasion events and more. Policies can be customized to the specific event for coverage of participant legal liability, liquor liability, medical expense, damage to premises rented, etc. High limits are available should a host facility require more than $1,000,000 in coverage.

Promotional Indemnity – Prize Insurance

Most people are familiar with half-court basketball shots and hole-in-one contests but these don’t even scratch the surface of the creative ways that your school can increase its revenue. You can also partner with a sponsor which can offset the cost of insurance while increasing the sponsor’s visibility, helping you to further enhance this critical relationship.

Event Cancellation Coverage

As Hurricane Katrina showed, one devastating occurrence can have a financial impact for years to come. Whether it’s the Final 4, a conference tournament, or an institution’s complete sporting season, significant dollars are at stake should such a catastrophic event cause the cancellation or postponement of your event(s). Expenses, and in some cases gross revenue, can be included under this cover to address the unexpected which seems to occur more often than ever these days. In addition to hurricanes, perils such as communicable disease and terrorist acts can be included in this protection.

Weather Coverage

Have you ever had an outdoor event impacted by rain? How much money did it cost the school? Did you know that you can protect against poor weather during your outdoor events? Rain insurance provides just such peace of mind as this coverage reimburses the institution if the insured amount of rain falls during the insured hours of the event. Simple as that! Don’t let your next fundraiser be at risk.

Incentive Bonus

incentive bonuses in their coach’s contracts to help motivate and maximize a team’s performance. Did you know that these bonuses are often insurable? The bonuses themselves are typically a liability on the school’s balance sheet until the season is completed. Insurance coverage removes these liabilities and frees cash for the marketing – or other – department to spend in a more productive manner. This protection also stabilizes the maximum amount of financial obligation to be incurred by the school, making a successful season a truly ‘win-win’ scenario.
